We wanted to share a few quick tips to help prevent common winter claims, especially frozen pipes and water damage. A little preparation now can make a big difference later.
Help Prevent Frozen Pipes
- Disconnect hoses from exterior faucets (even frost-proof ones).
- Shut off interior valves to outdoor faucets if available, and leave exterior faucets open to drain.
- Keep garage doors closed.
- Open cabinet doors where plumbing is located to allow warm air to circulate.
- Let faucets drip if pipes are at risk of freezing.
- Keep your home heated to at least 55°F, even if you’re away.
If You Suspect a Frozen Pipe
- Shut off your main water valve immediately.
- Check visible pipes where it’s safe to do so.
- Watch closely for leaks as temperatures rise.
- If a pipe is leaking, do not turn the water back on — drain the system and call a licensed plumber.
- Never use torches or heat guns to thaw pipes.
