Going on Vacation?

Summer vacation is all about getting away, relaxing, and enjoying some well deserved time off. But before you head out, take a few minutes to prepare your home too.

One of the easiest things you can do before leaving is turn off your main water supply. A small leak can quickly become a major problem while you are away. If you have a professionally installed water leak detection system with automatic shut off, make sure it is working properly before you leave.

It is also a good idea to make your home look occupied. Put lights on timers, pause your mail and packages, and ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on things. You may even want to avoid posting about your vacation until you are home. Sharing that you are away can unintentionally let people know your house is empty.

Before you leave, take a quick walk around the property. Check that windows and doors are locked, outdoor items are secured, and anything that could become a problem during a storm is put away.

And while you are thinking about your home, take a minute to think about your insurance. Have you made any major purchases recently? Completed renovations? Added jewelry, electronics, or other valuable belongings? If so, your coverage may need to be updated.

Finally, make sure someone you trust knows how to reach you and your insurance agent if something does happen while you are away.

A little preparation before you leave can help you come home to the relaxing vacation ending you were hoping for.
